NiteOut

I designed NiteOut, an 8-week UX case study focused on creating a human-centered nightlife discovery app. The goal was to help young people easily find local events, connect with others, and plan spontaneous nights out with ease.

The Challenge

Many young people find it difficult to discover nightlife events that truly fit their interests and budgets. Recommendations usually come from friends or social media, and event information is often scattered or unreliable.

Design Challenge

Empathize – Understanding the Problem

Key Insights

How might we help young people easily find and attend nightlife events that match their preferences and lifestyle?

To understand user needs, I conducted in-person interviews and an online survey with 10 participants aged 25–34. Both qualitative and quantitative questions helped reveal their motivations, habits, and challenges when planning nights out.

Most users rely on Instagram and friends’ recommendations.

Drink prices and venue reputation are key decision factors.

Many struggle to quickly find affordable, trustworthy nightlife options.

These findings revealed a clear opportunity for a simple and social event discovery platform.

Define – Persona

Based on the research, I developed a user persona representing the app’s main audience — young, social professionals who want new experiences but find it time-consuming to search for reliable nightlife options.

This persona guided NiteOut’s tone and features, focusing on fun, discovery, and community.

Ideate – Developing the Solution

App Goals

With insights in place, I created an information architecture and user flows to define how users would explore events, connect with friends, and purchase tickets directly in the app.

  • Simplify event discovery and personalization.

  • Allow in-app ticket purchases and payments.

  • Enable social interaction and shared experiences.

Main Navigation

  • Events

  • Simplify event discovery and personalization.

  • Allow in-app ticket purchases and payments.

  • Enable social interaction and shared experiences.

User Flow

  • I designed two key user flows:

    1. Buying two tickets and splitting the payment with a friend.

    2. Submitting feedback after attending an event.

Prototype – From Sketches to Wireframes

  • I started with quick sketches to explore layout ideas and moved into low- and mid-fidelity wireframes in Figma. This step helped refine the user journey, ensuring that each interaction felt intuitive and cohesive before creating the high-fidelity prototype.

Test – Usability Testing & Iterations

  • I ran usability tests with three participants and used Maze to collect additional remote feedback.

    Key Findings:

    • The “Art & Culture” category didn’t match the app’s nightlife focus → replaced with more relevant categories.

    • Font size on the Past Tickets page was too small → improved legibility and alignment.

These updates made the experience feel more focused, readable, and consistent.

Visual Design System

  • To capture the energy of nightlife, I designed a dark, modern interface accented with bright pink tones to evoke excitement and motion.

Typography: Roboto — chosen for clarity and adaptability across screens.
The overall visual direction communicates a bold, urban, and energetic style while maintaining accessibility and contrast.

Lessons Learned

  • This project showed me how important it is to understand users deeply before designing.

It also strengthened my ability to turn research insights into design decisions that balance usability, aesthetics, and business goals.

  • Small choices like color, layout, or tone can significantly shape the user experience.
